A freezer can provide many advantages, but you might notice your freezer making noise. Depending on the freezer model you have, it could be a very quiet sound you only hear whenever you are in front of it. But one thing is that you will notice when your freezer is making a sound that you shouldn’t.
If you hear scraping noises when you check your freezer, this could happen when a build-up of ice happens over the freezer fan. When this happens, defrosting the freezer will help to solve this problem. When you do this task, it is important to do this properly. Remember that you must wait for the ice to melt to complete the job.
Here’s what you can do when the freezer is making noise
Turn Off and Unload The Freezer
First, unplug the freezer or turn it off. Then remove all the food from the freezer and place it in a cooler to keep it from thawing.
Figure Out Where the Water Goes
You can lay some towels or plastic liners on the floor in front of the freezer. You can also place the lower shelves with rags or old beach towels to help absorb more moisture. Some of the freezers have a drainage hose to assist with the removal of water.
Let The Ice Melt
After you unplug the unit, leave the door open and wait for the ice to melt on its own. Position a fan near it to help the defrosting process go faster. Open the freezer door and position the fan so that the air circulates into the freezer.
Clean Up Inside The Freezer
As the ice in the freezer melts, mop it up using rags or old towels. Beach towels can work well for large size and helps you to mop up more water. Once all of the ice is melted and wiped away, you can start cleaning the inside of the freezer with a mixture of one tablespoon of baking soda and four cups of hot water. Use a rag to wipe it down the racks, inner walls, and door of the freezer. After this, use a damp cloth to dry everything.
Turn It Back On and Refill
After the defrost, clean and dry the freezer, turn the power back on and wait for it to reach the proper temperature. Depending on the ambient temperature and food loads, this can take several hours. Once the freezer is ready, you can take the food out of the cooler and put it back in your appliance.
Aside from the scraping noise, you may also hear your freezer making noise such as dripping and buzzing, which indicates other concerns with the appliance. Ensure to check this to prevent other issues from happening.
What Are The Common Causes of Unusual Freezer Noise
The sounds that you hear from your freezer are due to different reasons. Some of these are the following:
Appliance Not Level
If your freezer or refrigerator constantly vibrates, it may not be level with the ground.
Dirty Condenser Coils
Condenser coils are clogged with dust and block the proper airflow.
Faulty Evaporator Fan
Your freezer’s evaporator fan helps to keep the appliance cool by circulating the air and ventilating the evaporator coils. A loud clicking, buzzing, or humming sound may happen if this is damaged.
